Murals

I’ve painted dozens of walls, wood, windows and big surfaces from the east to west coasts. In the early days of building the studio in LA, I splashed countless windows and walls all around the city. I brightened the streets of the SFV, west of Woodland Hills, through Reseda and all points east . The entire body of this work was created before digital cameras prevailed and as a result only a few remnants of the era exist.

Concrete Block Wall Mural

In an effort to contribute resources to our children’s Nursery School, I signed myself up for this project. The goal was to revitalize a 120’ wall that was formerly covered by a dense foliage which was prone to rodents. When the greenery was removed it revealed a rough mixed set of materials. Green chain-link on the top of a square concrete block with a deep grout line.

The composition of the wall made me think immediately of pixels. I thought it would be an interesting and efficient way to tackle the project if we created a pixel color rainbow with inspirational, simple words for pre-students and families.

We leveled the horizontal bars of the chain-link and replaced it with a flexible baked aluminum from the sign supply shop. The pattern and approach was intended to be “easy to maintain” for many years to come.

Hand Script

Its not safe to hang things over a baby crib… but you can paint something! Tapping into the hand lettering skills… made a perfect fit. White with iridescent gold inline and a subtle pink drop shadow.

Window Splashes

When I first landed in LA I had $300.00 and a whole lot of hustle. With so much creative opportunity in the Greater Los Angeles area I had no idea which direction to head. My best idea was to leverage the promotional and typographical skills I learned as an apprentice to an independent sign painter back east. So I did just that… I hit the streets of LA with some dayglow paint, trim rollers and foam brushes.

A Watercolor Window Splash is a type of temporary mural. Its created freehand with dayglow color tempra paints. A window splash is part of the sign makers craft. It takes a strong hand typographic skill and an eye for color and layout. The goal is to create awareness to a retail location event that grabs the attention of people who pass by.
